The Name Sophora comes from Arabic meaning a small tree with pea like flowers. Sun King is partly in homage to its Chilean roots as well as the colour of the flowers. Sophora 'Sun King' has very few pests and diseases that attack it apart from the usual slugs and snails when young. Like all plants, it would benefit from a feed of Vitax Q4.

But amongst the 50 species of Sophora (in the Legumuminosae family) there has been some confusion and reclassification, and in recent years it has been convincingly demonstrated that the plant S. microphylla 'Sun King' is in fact a hybrid between S.cassioides and S. macrocarpa (both Chilean). S. microphylla is from New Zealand.

This is a semi evergreen small tree in our climate. S. tetraptera has long drooping clusters of yellow flowers in late spring and should be trained onto a wall for best effect. S. davidii is smaller growing and deciduous with terminal racemes of purple-blue and white flowers in late May or early June.
